RULES FOR .IE DOMAIN REGISTRATIONS

The applicant must be the named individual or organisation to whom the domain name is to be registered. A domain name cannot be registered in the name of a trademark or a Registered Business Name except by the owners of these trademarks themselves.

All applicants, regardless of the category of domain name being applied for, must demonstrate a real and substantive connection with Ireland.

The domain name chosen must be sufficiently close to the legal name on which the application is based but in the case of corporate names accepted abbreviations suffice. and common phrases or generic business terms can be omitted such as 'holdings", "group", "shipping" etc.

There are 6 Categories of Domain that can be registered

  • Personal Name
  • Corporate Name
  • Registered Trade Mark
  • Registered Business Name
  • State Agency Name
  • Publication Name.

Original documentation is required to substantiate the eligiblility for the above and a real and substantial connection with Ireland.

As a general guide the better the documentation the quicker and easier the domain registration process.

Under each of these categories we set out the minimum document requirement.

Personal Name

1. Passport or Birth Certificate

Corporate Body Name

Certificate of incorporation and CRO number to be included

Registered Trade Mark

Copy of trademark certificate, if trademark is pending then other documentation may be supplied such as documentation from the patents office.

Registered Business Name

This will do doubt be the most common category. It is important to note that the applicant must be an individual or an organisation that the RBN has been registered to. Documentation to be supplied if the RBN is less than 6 months old is a copy of the Certificate. If more than 6 months old then the RBN number to be included in application along with evidence proving current or a serious intent to carry out trading under the RBN. Domain name must be reasonably close to Registered Business Name.

State Agency

Reasonable documentation to prove name, existence and statuatory status of the agency. This may include letter from a Government Department.

Publication Name

Documentation is required to substantiate claims that they are elegible to register the name and a copy of the publication is required also.

Validity:

The following characters are allowed in the name of a sub-domain: the characters of the Roman alphabet without diacritical marks and irrespective of case [A-Z,a-z], the numeric characters [0-9], and the hyphen [-]. The first and last characters of the name must be either alphabetic or numeric.

3.2: The length of a sub-domain name must be at least three characters there appears to be no upper limit but obviously too long a domain is confusing
